We do a lot of writer websites and the main question I get asked is, “How can I display and organize my articles?”

This is a great question, because for a writer, the editors looking to hire you need to see your clips. But most writers can and do write on a variety of subjects, so it’s important that these clips can be organized so that editors can quickly see your work. So how do we do that?

My favorite way to easily share articles is through a Custom Post Type. (Link is for an article explaining what and how to use Custom Post Types.) Once you set up your custom post types, which I typically name “articles,” you’ll want to set up a taxonomy. That’s how you are able to sort and filter your articles by subject.

A few examples – on this site for writer Elisabeth Eaves, we set up simple text links for all her articles, but put in a sorting featured to allow the articles to be narrowed down by subject.

Sort Articles by Subject

Author Gene Fax wanted to showcase the articles that he’s written for other publications along with a featured image. You can check out his article page page here. He didn’t need to sort by subject, so we set up just a nice looking grid.

Writer Margaret Littman wanted to have a portfolio that leads to smaller portfolios of work with a neat hover effect.

There are lots of ways to make this work, but the main thing is that it’s easy to maintain! You want to be able to easily update your portfolio, whether you’re adding your articles right to the site, or linking to them on other publications websites.
