Laptop with website showing

Whether you are working with a pro or doing it yourself, there are ways to do it right and ways to do wrong and today I have a few simple tips for making your website look great.

Get a professional logo

Often folks want to skip having a professional logo done to cut costs, but having a professional logo is really important for your business. When you have a professionally made logo, you can then use it across every platform including in car wraps, signs, and billboards.

Don’t fear white space

White space never killed a conversion. But for some reason, many people are afraid of having white space on their website. Let there be white space.

White space is simply the space on your site between elements, the unmarked part of the page. And it doesn’t even technically have to be “white” to be white space. It just needs to be clear of other things.

White space makes it easier for people to read your website and it prevents people from feeling overwhelmed by your content and graphics.

(If white space was a usability killer, Google wouldn’t be the #1 search engine in the world.)

Use awesome images

That photo you took in your office with your phone? Delete it. It’s no good. Yes, phones these days take good photos but they won’t replace a excellent photo taken by a professional. A professional photographer knows how to position you for the best photo, knows how to light the area for better photos, and can make your photos go from okay to great.

Proofread your content

There’s nothing that will make your website look more unprofessional than having grammar errors or typos. Read your content, fix the errors, or have someone else do it for you.

Pro-Tip: Content is what drives search engines to your website, so be sure you write or have written quality content. A pictures only website won’t help you in the search engines.

There’s a tendency to want to do “all the things” when getting your website done, but that’s usually not the best tactic. For most website owners, keeping things simple is going to be the best bet for having a great looking website.
