get more blog followers

blogHave a blog, but don’t have anyone signed up? There are ways to fix that! First, understand that you won’t get 1000 new subscribers overnight, and that you will actually have to put some work into this process to see results. Just because you have a blog does not mean people will start following you.

Here are my best tips for gaining subscribers:

  1. Write with regularity. That’s right, an infrequent, randomly written blog is not going to get traffic or subscribers. Set a schedule and try to stick with it.
  2. Write great content. No one cares what you had for lunch. Write good content about your subject area, stuff people want to read. This is the #1 rule of blogging. Content is king.
  3. Offer options for subscribing. You’ll notice right there in the sidebar a sign up on my site so that you can get all our posts in your email. But wait, there’s more! You can also subscribe with a feedreader by clicking the orange RSS button above. Or, you can subscribe from a pop up that occasionally appears when you click through to a single blog post on my site. People read content in different ways, so give them options for subscribing.
  4. Share your content on social media. Every time we write a blog post, it immediately gets blasted out to our Facebook wall, our Twitter profile, our Google plus page, and Linked in. Then, if we’re feeling frisky, we also share it on our personal accounts as well. Make sure the people you engage on social media know you are writing great stuff! If you want to double-up on this, you can even use a service like CoSchedule to blast your content out at different times.
  5. Read and comment on other blogs. Have you ever read a blog, seen an interesting comment, and then clicked through to that commenter’s site? Of course you have. And others will to. But first, that means writing interesting, insightful comments on what other people are writing.

BONUS TIP: Offer a “free gift” for signing up. People love to get free stuff. Offer a free download, a pdf, tips for business, tips for blogging, anything you have written and can offer to entice people to subscribe.

Gaining readers is great, because what’s the point of writing if no one reads it? But you have to be active in the process. People won’t just randomly show up at your site, begging for content. You have to put in the time, and effort, but eventually, you’ll see your readership start to grow!
