Design is thinking made visual

Design is thinking made visualBeauty is in the eye of the beholder

It isn’t always easy to design for multiple clients, especially when they have tastes that aren’t always parallel to your own. I strive to give my clients the perfect website for their business, even if it isn’t something that I personally consider attractive. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and often beauty isn’t what makes a website successful – I think Craig’s List is an appropriate example here.

Always sign a contract before starting a design project

A contract is a legal agreement and explains in detail the relationship between the client and your business. This contract is in place to protect both you and your client. It should detail everything from intellectual property to ongoing maintenance. If you aren’t using a contract, you can learn how to get one here.

The client isn’t always right

The client has the majority of input on the design, but often they will make decisions that could compromise their website. The client hires us as a designer because they respect our decisions in the design world. If a client is making a bad choice, it is our responsibility to step up and let them know there are better options available.

Ask detailed questions before the project

I have a list of questions I ask my clients that detail almost every aspect of the design process. The questions range from color and font desires to the client’s marketing goals and objectives. You can’t ask too many or too detailed questions. This process will help create an initial design to get your project off to great start.

Always stay positive

It isn’t easy, especially when things happen that are beyond your control. Things may seem impossible, but there is always a solution and a positive attitude goes a long way to assure clients you are there to help them every step of the way. If you handle your clients questions respectfully and with confidence you will be surprised at how often you get the same respect in return. This reciprocity creates a positive business experience for both parties.
